UNISA REGISTERED NURSE TRAINING PROGRAM MEETS NEW AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL STANDARDS

Sunday, May 30, 2010

On Wednesday, June 2, Dr. Terri Gibson of the University of South Australia (UniSA) will be in the Philippines to conduct a seminar on how Philippine nurses can become professionally licensed in Australia. From July 1, 2010, the State Nursing Boards will be replaced by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) as the regulatory authority for the Nursing and Midwifery professions across Australia. All nurses and midwives will now have to meet the same national requirements to be registered and their registration will be recognised in all States and Territories. The seminar is organized by International Education Specialists of Makati, the official representative of UniSA and is free of charge to all who want to attend. The Venue is the AIM Conference Center in Legaspi Village, Makati, and the seminar will start at 6.30pm. Pre-registration is essential to secure a seat and maybe done on line at www.inter-ed.com (click on the Seminar Banner text), or by texting 0917-535-1956 or calling 819-1001.

UniSA has received national approval from the nmbSA for their Australian Registered Nurse Training Program (ARNTP), CRICOS No. 015025A which will have its first intake in October 2010. The program takes just 18 weeks to complete and is a non-award professional certificate for registered nurses who already hold a diploma or degree in nursing, are professionally licensed in their home country, have hospital-based work experience and have demonstrated competency in English (IELTS 7.0). Since its inception in 2003, more than 340 overseas educated registered nurses have successfully completed the ARNTP and registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Board in South Australia. The shortage of registered nurses in South Australia creates significant opportunity for employment after registration for all UniSA nurses and the opportunity to apply for permanent residency. Wages for Nurses in Australia are commensurate with their work responsibilities and typical starting salaries are around AUD$65,000.00/year.

The nature of the program is to prepare overseas qualified registered nurses with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to enable them to meet the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) competency standards to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board and practice as a registered nurse in the Australian healthcare system. The ARNTP is offered at the University of South Australia (UniSA) over 18 weeks of full-time study. The program comprises of three courses (18 units); i) Registered Nurse/Registered Midwife: Professional Issues in Australia; ii) Registered Nurse: Nursing Practice; iii) Professional Practice: Registered Nurse.  This is broken down into 300 hours (6hrs/day x 5 days/week x 10 weeks) of lectures, tutorials, workshops, skills laboratory simulation and self-directed study and 320 hours (8hrs/day x 5 days/week x 8 weeks) of clinical practicum. Dr. Terri Gibson will be the main seminar presenter and will discuss how the UniSA program is highly cost-effective for nurses from the Philippines who want to be registered and eligible for employment in the health care sector in Australia.
